If you’re having problems with your erection, the first step is to relax. If you’re concerned that your inability to maintain your erection is because you physically can’t, here’s a strange but simple test. Since men almost always get an erection during REM sleep, take a strip of postage stamps and attach it around your penis before going to sleep. If you’re like most men, in the morning the strip will be broken.
It’s most likely, however, that you don’t have a physical problem, so the next step is to address the stress or whatever else is responsible for your erectile dysfunction. Again, learning to relax may help. Letting your partner take the lead—which takes the responsibility off you—may also help. If, however, these techniques don’t work, you may find it helpful to see a sex therapist. However, in most cases this is not necessary; when the stress clears up or you deal with your problem, your ability to maintain an erection will return.
